Celebrate. OFTEN.

Remember to CELEBRATE your teachers and students! I am going to push you beyond monthly assemblies to do something daring! In the schools I have visited, I have seen positive phone calls home made by administrators on a daily basis, positive behavior referrals made by teachers and read by principals with whole school shout outs over the PA system, and I have seen parent breakfasts hosted for high achieving students and their families. I have seen teacher gift cards, teacher get out of duty passes, and teachers positively recognized during PD by their peers and principal. I have yet to see high performing principals regularly recognized (once each year at convocation is not enough). What are you doing to celebrate what is working? So often in education we focus on areas of need. Just like we push teachers to recognize student achievement we must work to recognize high performing principals and teachers! When is the last time that you told a principal or teacher that they did well? Teachers, when is the last time you publicly celebrated a student’s success?

I know you must be thinking, Dr. Kia, I want to celebrate my teachers/students but I am not sure how to begin. Don’t worry! You know I have some resources for you. See below:

Remember, to lead is to constantly learn and while others may not tell you the truth, I always will. You need to remain positive and tell people what they are doing well if you are ever going to change the way things have always been. – Dr. Kia
